The beautiful midwife who delivered my little Lily last year, is undertaking an incredible task of opening a Birth and Family Wellness Centre in a rural area just outside our hometown of Knysna. The people living in this area are lacking in education and nutrition. It is Mandi’s vision to create a centre where:

  • Basic healthcare is offered
  • Healthy, low risk mothers can give birth
  • A vehicle is available should a transfer to hospital be necessary
  • Lush, productive food gardens surround the centre and feed the project
  • Training is provided for locals in organic home-based food production
  • Small community businesses are established which fund the maintenance of the centre and provide employment and business opportunities for local community
  • A crèche, affiliated to the Centre, provides meaningful childcare as well as training for community pre‐ school teachers
  • Community members who show aptitude and interest will be trained as healthcare professionals to go back and serve the needs of their communities

Mandi is near the end of her 4 year process of becoming a Certified Professional Midwife. In order for her to qualify and realise her dream of the clinic, she needs to raise R60 000 (US $ 9 000). She is undertaking a 200km cycle tour through our local areas in order to raise awareness and her required funds. I am asking you today to please head on over to her website, take a look at what she is all about, and if you are able to spare any amount (as she said, “No amount is too small”) to please donate. It truly is a worthwhile cause.
