NATURAL FRIDAYS: Ayurvedic Massage

by Sarah on February 25th, 2011

Another really important aspect to Ayurvedic medicine, besides diet, is massage. It does amazing things for the body, mind and soul.

Here’s a list of some of the benefits:

  • Improves the body’s circulation, which helps our cells to grow and renew themselves.
  • Dispels toxins.
  • Helps with relaxation.
  • Revitalises the body.
  • Increases memory power.
  • Improves vigour and vitality.
  • Can help make one physically and mentally fit.

There are several different types of ayurvedic massage. There’s Pizhichil, Njavarakizhi, Shirodhara, Shirovasti, Abhyangam, Elakizhi and Ubatan, each focuses on different ailments and has different benefits. It’s important to visit a fully trained Ayurvedic massage practioner so that they can give you the variation you need.

I unfortunately live in a small town, and so can’t seem to find a practioner. I did manage to find a little guide to giving yourself an Indian head massage. It’s not quite the real deal, but does feel wonderful and super relaxing. Even better, I’m planning on asking my husband to give me one the next time I have a hectic day :)
