Baby’s first curry

by Kerryn on December 14th, 2010

A colleague of Scott’s gave us this fantastic recipe for a dhal (an Indian lentil dish) that is suitable for babies. I tried it out on Georgie this weekend and she really loved it. I combined it with rice and veggies and pureed it up. By adding rice to this dish you get a complete protein (i.e. provides all the amino acids that your body needs). I also think that it is a great way to introduce your baby to spices.

First curry

  • 2 cups red lentils
  • 4 cups water (or homemade stock)
  • ¼ tsp cinammon
  • ¼ tsp cumin
  • ¼ tsp turmeric
  • 0.5 cm chunk of fresh ginger (optional)

I soaked my lentils for 10 or so minutes and then rinsed them until the water ran clear. I read that this is meant to reduce digestive gassiness. Add all ingredients to pot, bring to boil, simmer for about 30 mins or until tender and water has been absorbed. I added fresh ginger to this recipe, which wasn’t in the original, but added a bit of extra flavour. I’m really pleased to have a cheap, vegetarian, protein rich meal to add to our solids collection.

P.S. Scott and I ate a “grown-up” version of dhal, which also turned out really well. I served ours with caramalised onions, chutney, pappadums and coriander.
