NATURAL PRODUCTS: The Wrap

by Sarah on July 27th, 2010

My absolute favourite gift that I was given when Lily was born is my Sleepy Wrap. I take Lily for a walk in it every morning and have her in it for at least two sleeps a day. Actually, she’s in it right now as I type.

I’ve done a lot of reading about the importance of “wearing” your baby as often as you can (it all ties in nicely with Attachment Parenting and The Continuum Concept), and it makes total sense to me. They feel safe and secure being so close to their Mom or Dad, hearing your heartbeat, taking in your smell, and feeling your warmth. Even more, it helps with Lily’s reflux, because she spends so much time in the upright position. The Sleepy Wrap website also says:

CARRIED BABIES…

  • Cry Less! (43% less overall and 54% less during the evening hours)1
  • Are Healthier! (gain weight faster, have better motor skills, coordination, increased muscle tone, and sense of balance)2
  • Get a better view of the world! (babies pushed in strollers or lugged around in car seats only get to see the adult world at knee-level)
  • Become Independent Faster! (making them more confident and less clingy)3
  • Sleep Better! (they fall asleep quicker and sleep for longer periods of time)
  • Learn More! (not overstimulated, but calm and alert, observing the world around them)
  • And are just plain Happier!4

My sister had a friend bring mine back from the USA but I know that there are others which are just the same and are made here in South Africa, like the UbbaBubba. A must for your Bubba if you ask me :)

Ahh, that answers that – the Continuum Concept and Attachment Parenting right there.

I wish I could say my family experienced all those benefits. I ‘wear’ Anya a lot and love it but she is 7.5 months old now and is certainly NOT sleeping longer than other of the babies her age… quite the opposite. Then again we co-sleep, so perhaps the two cancel each other out? :p

    Great blog. Thanks for sharing,

I didn’t wear my daughter all that much(though I did carry her around a lot) because I had an awful and very uncomfortable Bjorn. When my son came along, I done my research and ordered a ring sling and a wrap. What a difference in comfort. We had a wonderful baby-wearing experience. :)
